Policy Initiatives

Greensmith is a member of CESA and remains actively engaged in policy initiatives affecting advanced energy storage.  The following is a summary of these policies.

Nationwide – State Renewable Portfolio Standards:

33 of the 50 United States have adopted some form of Renewable Portfolio Standard, requiring electricity providers to generate a certain amount of renewable energy as a total percentage of their generation supply.  These standards create unprecedented steps towards a more environmental future. However, these intermittent energy sources will require higher levels of energy storage to effectively integrate into the grid. Learn more.

US Federal:

FERC Order 755, issued in October 2011 requires ISOs and RTOs to pay a two-part payment for frequency regulation resources, including a capacity and a performance payment. Also known as “pay-for-performance,” this Order improves the payback rate for energy storage resources providing frequency regulation services, improving the economics of many advanced energy storage projects. California Energy Storage OIR:

California Assembly Bill 2514 (AB2514) requires the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) to consider the adoption of procurement targets for viable and cost-effective energy storage systems.  The CPUC proceeding will open in March 2012. Learn more.
